"THIS IS THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT LEAVE IT" - as though that's a coherent policy rather than an evasion of the trends we actually face. we were done in by the fecklessness of our forebears, and now our own generations are too retarded and gay to fix the resulting disaster.

https://www.splcenter.org/20180419/mcinnes-molyneux-and-4chan-investigating-pathways-alt-right

What brings someone into the alt-right ecosystem?

The question was posed in two threads posted during the last week of March on the white nationalist forum The Right Stuff (TRS), leading 74 individual users to describe their radicalization narratives.

Respondents recount a transformation that takes place almost entirely online. Led either by their own curiosity or an algorithm, the content they consumed became increasingly extreme, fostering their radicalization and guiding them eventually to TRS. Their responses reveal a pipeline between the alt-lite and racist “alt-right,” with many users explaining that alt-lite figures like Gavin McInnes were the first to introduce them to hardcore, veteran white nationalists.

The two threads, titled “WHAT BROUGHT YOU INTO THE MOVEMENT?” and “Path here beginning from Gavin,” asked posters to reflect on their own “red pill” narratives and provide tips for converting others. “Here’s the challenge,” a user identified as The Somalisher wrote. “Create a list of succession from the Alt-Light to us. I have friends who like Gavin…But I can’t exactly throw [Andrew] Anglin at them.”

The user continued, “It sometimes requires softer steps to ‘radical’ perspectives.”

The two threads refer specifically to bringing people into the fold of TRS and the Daily Stormer, which together serve as the core of neo-Nazism online. TRS, the brainchild of Mike “Enoch” Peinovich, started as a political blog in 2012 and has since transformed into one of the largest alt-right media platforms. It hosts a lively message board called the 504um and dozens of podcasts, the most popular of which are “The Daily Shoah” and news-oriented “Fash the Nation.” The Daily Stormer operates in the same orbit, consciously using humor to indoctrinate its readers.

Together, the two sites have become the preeminent propaganda machines for the alt-right. They’re also some of the most effective spaces for organizing real-world, local groups, called “book clubs” by the Stormer and “pool parties” on TRS.

The alt-right is a motley movement, drawing in people from a number of venues and subcultures. The 107 individuals and platforms mentioned by posters in the TRS threads have been labeled according to their ideology, which include alt-right, legacy white nationalist, alt-lite, mainstream, libertarian, skeptic, men’s rights activist, and conspiracy, in addition to a random category for those not easily classified. This heterogeneity is a boon to the movement, creating a number of avenues for individuals of different taste and predilections to fall within its clutches.

Though both the alt-lite and alt-right reject “establishment” conservatism, the former claims to adhere to civic nationalism — a poorly defined catch-all term for those who embrace nativism but shy away from more radical racist rhetoric — while the latter is explicitly white nationalist. Legacy white nationalists include those like Jared Taylor, Patrick Buchanan and Paul Kersey who, although they might be popular within the alt-right, were part of the white nationalist movement before that label emerged.

The number of times each individual or platform was mentioned as an influence was tallied, and those mentioned by three or more posters are listed in the chart below. Disconnected as they might seem, the most cited influences — the “politically incorrect” 4chan board /pol/ and the American Renaissance editor Jared Taylor — hint at two common paths to the alt-right: either through participation in the rampantly racist and misogynistic online trolling culture of 4chan and its offshoots, or through exposure to Taylor’s variety of pseudo-academic “race realism” that couches timeworn racist tropes in the language of science.

Within alt-right spaces like TRS, these two fibers of the movement are woven together — resulting in an ironic, meme-ified version of old-school race science — and embellished with antisemitism.

TRS and the Daily Stormer both argue that, with the right optics and messaging, they can attract a critical mass of followers to the cause and eventually shift what lies within the respectable terms of political debate. The respondents in these threads show how the current media landscape — replete with podcasts, YouTube channels and blogs that contain tempered bits of white nationalist propaganda under the guise of patriotism, “Western chauvinism,” science or hard truths — can aid that agenda, coaxing the “normies” down the path to white nationalism.

Gavin McInnes (right), founder of the Proud Boys.
"Stepping stones" and "in-betweeners"
TRS 504um posters describe their radicalization as a gradual process, with charismatic alt-lite personalities like Gavin McInnes introducing them to ideas they would eventually take to their extreme. McInnes, especially, hides under a guise of irony, freely using racial slurs and making incendiary comments about women, Muslims and African Americans in the name of mocking political correctness.

McInnes, who formed the Proud Boys in 2016, has repeatedly insisted the SPLC-designated hate group is simply a right-wing men’s drinking club in the vein of the Elks Lodge, and has taken pains to distance himself from the alt-right. But even he agrees that there’s overlap between his “Western chauvinist” Proud Boys and self-proclaimed white nationalists: “both sides have in common Western chauvinism, they’re not embarrassed by whiteness or whatever, [and] they don’t believe diversity is the end-all and be-all.”

Responses within the TRS threads show how easy it is to slip from the notion that “the West is the best” into believing that western culture is superior because it’s white. Of the respondents in the sample, roughly 15 percent mentioned McInnes as a step in their path to white nationalism or recommended using his videos and writing to convert others. There are more than a few real-life examples of Proud Boys moving into more extreme groups.

McInnes is loathed by many at TRS for being unwilling to take racial politics head-on and “counter-signaling” them, but he’s still credited with helping to cultivate their own belief in white nationalism. In a thread called “Do We Still Hate Gavin McInnes?” a user calling themselves KarlVonBraun came to his defense, writing “I remember first hearing Gavin trash niggers who do that pole/street dance thing on the subway…Basically he says everything short of calling them worthless niggers. I'd literally never heard anyone be brutally honest about what is uniquely nigger behavior while maintaining decorum, without crossing lines you can't cross. It was totally exhilarating.” Another user wrote, “I guarantee that he is still (without meaning to) funneling people into the Alt-Right.”

McInnes is also responsible for introducing a number of TRS users to Jim Goad and, indeed, for much of the writer and podcaster’s recent resurgence in popularity. Goad got his start as a writer in the 1990s producing his own controversial and acerbic independent magazine and, in 1997, published a book in the same vein. The Redneck Manifesto, which begins with a chapter called “White Niggers Have Feelings, Too,” bemoans liberals’ tendency to look down on poor whites and argues, “Multiculturalism is a country club that excludes white trash.” Goad (much like McInnes) began his career as a sort of small-time countercultural celebrity, but his focus on white persecution now earns him widespread praise within the alt-right.

McInnes has hosted Goad on his shows numerous times and, on a list he created of “required reading” on Western culture, included Redneck Manifesto together with Patrick Buchanan’s The Death of the West and Charles Murray’s Coming Apart: The State of White America — both writers who are also mentioned as influences by TRS posters. One respondent called Goad’s book “an early redpill on the malicious anti-white agenda of the left.”

Goad takes advantage of the fact that he’s often treated as a serious literary figure, presenting his extremist views on race as simply thoughtful meditations on politically taboo topics or as an attempt to resist political correctness. He’s used his numerous platforms to perpetuate the myth of white slavery and criticized the “corporate globalist left” for making it difficult for the Daily Stormer to maintain a domain. He even hosted Andrew Anglin, the site’s founder, on his podcast, as well as former Ku Klux Klan lawyer Sam Dickson and the Holocaust-denying author Michael Hoffman.

Goad, who is cited six times by TRS members, disparages “Those who blame Jews for everything.” But in the same breath, he repeats their rhetoric, making him into what one poster calls the “missing link” from people like Gavin to the white nationalist TRS. If you’re trying to red pill a friend and “they like Gavin,” NotDonSilvo wrote, “send them his old podcast with Jim and some of his Taki articles or guest appearances in Gavin’s Compound Media [show].”

Besides his podcast, Goad’s main platform is Taki’s Magazine, an extreme right-wing publication with an irreverent tone that promises its “only ideology is to be against the junk culture foisted upon us by Hollywood and the mainstream media.” Along with Goad and McInnes, it publishes authors like John Derbyshire, who was fired from the conservative National Review after he wrote an article for Taki’s about advising his teenage children to “stay out of heavily black neighborhoods.” It described black people as “ferociously hostile to whites” and is now listed in the “greatest hits” section on Taki’s website.

Taki’s contributors overlap with those at the hate site VDARE, including Steve Sailer — cited four times by TRS users — whose writing is largely dedicated to opposing immigration and drawing a false link between race and intelligence.

Both Taki’s Magazine and VDARE are cited by posters of the TRS threads as “good in-betweeners,” and, together, are cited in more than 16 percent of responses. Both websites, the user Cniva wrote, are “good at presenting racism in a ‘we’re just being reasonable/this is what the science says, why are you acting so upset?’ type of way.”

Stefan Molyneux, a YouTube commentator best known for amplifying scientific racism.
Race realism
Many members of the forum note that McInnes’s online videos were particularly impactful because they introduce viewers to more extreme figures. “[D]ude i got here from Gavin because there was a time about 2-3 years ago when Gavin would take [sic] to people like Jared Taylor and Richard Spencer,” one user posted. In one of his genial interviews with Taylor (who he’s called a “super smart guy”), McInnes allowed the American Renaissance editor to peddle his racist tract “The Color of Crime,” which uses faulty statistical analysis to argue that non-whites are more prone to criminal behavior.

Respondents noted this kind of “race realism” — which relies on pseudoscientific evidence to argue that white people are a superior race — gave them a large push into the white nationalist camp. “If your prospect is an ‘objective’ type,” one forum member offered in a discussion of how to recruit others to their cause, “nothing beats race realism, and I’d say Jared Taylor and Alternative Hypothesis” — a “ human biodiversity” blog that argues race is genetically based — “are the most presentable, accessible, and pertinent in that field.” Another simply wrote, “Once I came across race realism it was over.” Indeed, Taylor is the second-most cited force for bringing people into the TRS/Daily Stormer network, with 20.3 percent of posters mentioning him.

Stefan Molyneux, a YouTube commentator, is also best known for amplifying scientific racism. Among his videos with titles like “Human Biodiversity and Criminality” and “Race, Genetics, and Intelligence,” he argues “skills and abilities have not been distributed evenly by mother nature between various ethnicities,” and multiethnic societies are a “problem” because “the blacks and the Hispanics, they don’t end up acting the same as the white population.” He’s also done a show with Taylor, titled “An Honest Conversation About Race,” that one respondent said they were “able to use” to help their friends and family “open their eyes.”

“These programs I think are the first steps,” they wrote.

The prolific Molyneux has attracted more than 770,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel, adding up to more than 230 million views of his videos. He relies largely on charisma, delivering ill-researched and scientifically unsound lectures with a degree of confidence that eases viewers into accepting his arguments.

Molyneux, one TRS poster explained, “remains a great stepping stone between the alt-light and the alt-right.”

“Gavin > Moly > AR [Alt-Right] is common,” another wrote.

The “skeptics” movement — whose adherents claim to challenge beliefs both scientific and spiritual by questioning the evidence and reasoning that underpin them — has also helped channel people into the alt-right by way of “human biodiversity.” Sam Harris has been one of the movement’s most public faces, and four posters on the TRS thread note his influence.

Under the guise of scientific objectivity, Harris has presented deeply flawed data to perpetuate fear of Muslims and to argue that black people are genetically inferior to whites. In a 2017 podcast, for instance, he argued that opposition to Muslim immigrants in European nations was “perfectly rational” because “you are importing, by definition, some percentage, however small, of radicalized people.” He assured viewers, “This is not an expression of xenophobia; this is the implication of statistics.” More recently, he invited Charles Murray on his podcast. Their conversation centered on an idea that lies far outside of scientific consensus: that racial differences in IQ scores are genetically based. Though mainstream behavioral scientists have demonstrated that intelligence is less significantly affected by genetics than environment (demonstrated by research that shows the IQ gap between black and white Americans is closing, and that the average American IQ has risen dramatically since the mid-twentieth century), Harris still dismissed any criticism of Murray’s work as “politically correct moral panic.”

For posters on TRS, Harris’ work blended easily into that of more overtly racist writers like Paul Kersey, whose popular blog, “Stuff Black People Don’t Like,” is reposted on American Renaissance. The site “really gets the noggin joggin and encourages you to search for answers,” one user wrote. Their “biggest stepping stone” was from Harris’ work to Kersey’s blog: “It was there I learned about race realism, IQ, genetics, bell curves, and the economic/political drivers behind the pushing of ‘diversity.’”

More than 12 percent of users note that Milo Yiannopoulos, former Brietbart editor, was part of their alt-right transformation.
Chan culture
While many on the TRS threads describe becoming fans of specific personalities like McInnes and Molyneux, who most often led them to legacy white nationalists like Taylor and Kersey, nearly as many came up through the more amorphous and anarchic spaces of right-wing digital culture that originated with 4chan. The anonymous “meme factory” traffics in humor and transgression, centering on the “politically incorrect” board /pol/ that nurtured the early alt-right and, especially, its misogyny. Nearly 23 percent of respondents said that chan culture helped them land at TRS.

Many of those who were eventually radicalized by 4chan came there relatively innocently. One user said memes led them to 4chan in the mid-2000s, but they eventually found their way to overtly racist /pol/ after Obama was elected for a second term. Others noted they “ironically” looked at /pol/, or they were led there by the more absurdist “random” board, /b/. One wrote that their friend, who they specified was not right-wing, told them to “surf /pol/ for fun.” “Humor is a powerful drug,” explained a poster who came for the political discussions but “stayed for the racist memes.”

Chan culture was male-dominated and heavily misogynistic. The sexism of these spaces eventually led many into the alt-right. According to one poster, “I always hated feminism and female empowerment, despite liking many elements of the left. When I got older and realized the left was only open to feminists or allies i stopped claiming it.”

This extreme anti-feminism gave fuel to various factions of male supremacy, like Men’s Rights Activists (MRAs) and MGTOWs (“Men Going Their Own Way”), who profess to forswear women completely, then complain about them constantly on the internet. Then came Gamergate, a harassment campaign against women in gaming that began in 2014. Anonymous harassers targeted women who worked in or commented on the industry for daring to enter a male-dominated space. Abusers used 4chan and other platforms to organize. After choosing their targets, the mob would dox them, send them rape and death threats, distribute fake pornographic images of them and generally stalk and torment them relentlessly.

It was an extremely important moment in the development of the alt-right, when young men from right-wing online spaces came together in a shared campaign against the “politically correct” culture of the left. One poster described the years 2012 to 2014 as a political “void,” but explained that he was brought back into politics — and entered far more extreme spaces — thanks to Gamergate. After 4chan’s founder Christopher Poole banned discussions of Gamergate from the site, the campaign’s supporters migrated to the more extreme 8chan.

The episode also helped bring figures like Milo Yiannopoulos to prominence. At the time, he worked for a small tech website and was one of the first journalists to cover the story, eventually leading to his job as an editor at the right-wing outlet Breitbart. More than 12 percent of users note that Yiannopoulos was part of their alt-right transformation, and often list him in tandem with Gamergate (cited by 8.1 percent of posters).

Alongside /pol/, Reddit was another crucial space in the growth of the alt-right — especially the infamous subreddit r/The_Donald, that arose in support of Donald Trump’s presidency. For some who came to the movement around 2015, it was the first place they went. “I’ve been an openly racist nigger hater since 2010, but I just didn’t know where to find content that was explicitly racist until I stumbled onto T_D and was able to find other stuff from there,” a TRS user wrote.

Mike "Enoch" Peinovich, creator of The Right Stuff website.
"Lolbertarians" and Neoreactionaries
Libertarianism is a common path to the alt-right. In fact, it was frustration with libertarianism that led Peinovich to create The Right Stuff. He became a libertarian after reading the works of Ludwig von Mises and Ayn Rand, but — after finding sources on human biodiversity — said he realized that libertarianism wasn’t “going to work for everyone” because different racial groups couldn’t be expected to behavior properly without a state to regulate them. TRS’s Ricky Vaughn — unmasked as Douglass Mackey on April 3 — described a similar trajectory. The one-time Ron Paul supporter eventually rejected libertarianism because it failed to account for many things that “drive current events” like “race, culture, all those kind of things.” He first grew frustrated with feminism, and then, after the shooting of Trayvon Martin, openly embraced racism.

Six posters mentioned Ron Paul as one of their political starting points, and 16 others mentioned libertarianism more generally. One TRS user said that he was a libertarian until he realized that his fellow believers “were fags for being ‘so principled’ with their open borders bullshit, that they ensured their desired society would never come about,” while another wrote they were a “lolbertarian until I realized only white people actually believe that garbage.” One simply wrote that they followed the “standard libertarian to nazi pipeline.”

AnCaps — or anarcho-capitalists — operate in much the same universe as libertarians, advocating for the eventual elimination of the state. According to one poster, “A couple dudes in my online AnCap circle went full bore with ‘you can't have libertarianism with mud genetics’ arguments. I was like ‘nah, that ain't true, and I'll show it ain't true.’ Then within a couple months I was like ‘yeah, that seems to be true. I think I'll go listen to that [William] Pierce guy” — Pierce authored the race war novel The Turner Diaries and is one of the most influential white supremacists in modern American history — “again but with an open mind, maybe if I actually check his claims I'll find out they're true too.’” He decided that Pierce was right.

The Dark Enlightenment is a political theory detailed by an obscure former academic named Nick Land in an online manifesto posted in 2012. It is an influential force within the alt-right that, like libertarianism, advocates for the recession of state power, though with different aims. Also known as “Neoreaction” and often shortened to “NRx,” adherents believe that capitalism should be accelerated to the point that corporate powers rule society, allowing natural hierarchies to emerge. They firmly believe in human biodiversity and reject democracy and egalitarianism (“it is easier to believe in Leprechauns than to believe in egalitarianism,” a sidebar on their subreddit suggests). In this essentially feudal society, the superior white race will supposedly rule. In other words, it is a rejection of Enlightenment principles. Many of its central ideas are popular within Silicon Valley, and former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon has reportedly expressed interest in the philosophy.

Four TRS posters cited the philosophy as an influence, with some embracing the manifesto as they moved away from libertarianism. “Many of the ideological seeds that would make me open to Hitlerism started with Dark Enlightenment,” one person wrote.

While the tenets of the Dark Enlightenment and the manifesto were cited in numerous popular blogs and passed between users in anonymous forums like Reddit, the political philosophy received arguably its biggest boost from Millennial Woes, a popular YouTuber who began his broadcasts from his father’s basement in Linlithgow, Scotland, in 2013.

Millennial Woes, whose real name is Colin Robertson, developed his political views as he was struggling to overcome clinical depression (a subject he meditates on in many videos), and his nihilism became intimately wound up in his politics. In a 2013 video titled “Depression in Individuals, and in Society,” Robertson described the negative-feedback loop that affects people with depression as something that can also plague the larger political culture. Depressed people engage in forms of self-sabotage because they are so used to the idea of failure, he explained, but justify this to themselves and others as a sort of journey in self-discovery — a reflection of the idea “that which doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.” Modern liberal society, Robertson claimed, was doing the same thing: slowly destroying itself with experiments in feminism and egalitarianism in the name of achieving some kind of enlightenment.

This landed Robertson firmly in the camp of Neoreactionaries and, eventually, the alt-right. “Equality is bullshit. Hierarchy is essential. The races are different. The sexes are different,” the description of a 2016 Millennial Woes video titled “We Are the Alt-right” read. The video itself presented the viewer with questions like “Are you disturbed by the condition of our societies?” and “Don’t want your daughter to end up in a burka or with a non-white guy?” “What you need,” the text continued, “is a visit to the Alternative Right,” before a long list of alt-right outlets — including TheRightStuff.biz, American Renaissance, Red Ice, Alternative Hypothesis, Stefan Molyneaux, and of course, Millennial Woes — flashed on the screen.

Robertson brought a huge number of followers with him on his journey to the alt-right. His channel currently has more than 47,000 subscribers, while his videos have been viewed upwards of 7 million times. And it seems that Robertson’s trials with depression weren’t only a fundamental part of his political development, but helped attract others looking for support online — apparently an entry point to the alt-right for many. One TRS poster explained that they “Watched a Millennial Woes video on depression (I was miserable). He mentioned various things I had never heard of (neoreaction, Alt Right). I found Richard Spencer. I found TRS. Life completely changed…”

Red Ice is an alt-right news program hosted by husband and wife Henrik Palmgren and Lana Lokteff. It was by far the most cited YouTube channel in the TRS threads.
YouTube personalities
YouTube personalities like Millennial Woes are an indispensable part of the alt-right and helped guide many toward the movement. TRS posters mentioned more than 20 YouTube personalities or channels that helped lead them to the forum.

The YouTube algorithm, which determines what will autoplay after one video has finished and places recommended videos in the sidebar, also plays a role in coaxing viewers into the deeper depths of the alt-right by presenting them with ever more extreme content. As a recent Wall Street Journal investigation showed, YouTube promotes material that tend to keep people on their site longer, and those videos often happen to be among the more extreme content on the site.

This was something that multiple TRS posters noted in their comments. After streaming an alt-lite podcast called “Disdain for Plebs,” a user wrote that a Red Ice interview with TRS’s Jazzhands McFeels, host of “Fash the Nation,” autoplayed next. “Been a TRSodomite ever since,” they wrote. “I used to be a part of the anti-SJW crowd, then I found Jared Taylor and was hooked to that type of content, and then I found TDS clips, Murdoch Murdoch, and the Merchant Minute, pretty much all at once. And now I'm here,” another posted, “Thank you based Youtube suggested videos algorithm.”

Red Ice, an alt-right news program hosted by husband and wife Henrik Palmgren and Lana Lokteff, is by far the most cited YouTube channel in the TRS threads. Starting out in 2003 largely focused on the paranormal and conspiracy theories, Red Ice evolved into a white nationalist propaganda outfit, exploring white nationalism, antisemitism and Holocaust denial, and promoting the myth of white genocide. One TRS user said it was Red Ice that fed them “THE RED PILL,” convincing them “THE JQ and WHITE GENOCIDE ARE REAL.”

Within the alt-right, Red Ice seems to play a role similar to McInnes, but for those farther along in their conversion. Like the video series hosted by the Proud Boys leader, Red Ice is often noted for its role in helping to introduce viewers to new alt-right figures and ideas. One poster said they first found Andrew “weev” Auernheimer, a neo-Nazi internet troll who frequently writes for the Daily Stormer, through Red Ice, and “then found their interview with Anglin, which quickly escalated to the shoah and the rest is hate history.”

Because it has a female host, Red Ice is exceptional within the overwhelmingly male alt-right. Between posts about hating feminists and jokes about beating women, some on the TRS 504um mention that the show could be useful for bringing other women into the movement. “[T]hey offer LOTS of content explicitly for ladies,” DinoCon wrote. Lauren Southern and Brittany Pettibone, both young alt-lite women with popular YouTube channels, received similar recognition within the TRS threads.

YouTube has also been the platform for a number of up-and-coming young alt-right political commentators who favor a newsy style. The most popular among them is James Allsup, a former president of the College Republicans at Washington State University. His YouTube channel gained popularity during the 2016 presidential election and now has more than 235,000 subscribers. He recently announced he’s a member of the white nationalist group Identity Evropa, and he uses his videos to promote identitarianism, denigrate feminism and fight “anti-white racism.”

Andrew Anglin formed the neo-Nazi site, the Daily Stormer. TRS users are somewhat torn about when people should be introduced to this site.
"The JQ"
Unlike the alt-lite and many members of the alt-right, posters and lurkers on TRS describe themselves as fully red-pilled on the “JQ,” or the “Jewish question.” The TRS forum and podcasts it hosts contain the most popular and influential antisemitic content within the alt-right. TRS founder Mike Peinovich is credited with creating the popular (((echo))) meme. The antisemitic symbol originated from the TRS podcast “The Daily Shoah,” where the hosts – usually consisting of Jesse Craig Dunstan (AKA Seventh Son or Sven), Alex McNabb and Jayoh de la Rey in addition to Peinovich – use a reverb sound effect when discussing Jewish people and institutions.

Posters note that the “JQ” was often the hardest pill for them to swallow on their journey to the 504um, and that it is an obstacle to converting others: “I have found that most normies cant handle hearing the word jew more than a few times before they get uncomfortable and want it to stop,” one wrote. One recommended that the “simplest path to pro-white views” was “Cultural Marxism > Race > JQ.”

“Fash the Nation,” a TRS podcast produced weekly by hosts Jazzhands McFeels and Marcus Halberstram, provides listeners with a hearty dose of antisemitism in the form of political commentary. Cited as an influence by eight posters, the podcast eases listeners in by tackling issues like immigration with an often-dispassionate tone reminiscent of mainstream political podcasts.

More than anything, TRS posters noted that humor was what convinced them to embrace antisemitism. “If you can get them to laugh, you can get them on our side,” user LeBlanc wrote, “That’s the whole things with TRS.” They, along with others in the threads, specifically mentioned TDS host Dunstan’s antisemitic parody songs as a means of entering the alt-right. They include (among others) a spoof of Tom Petty’s “I Need to Know” about taking a 23andme DNA test to determine if the singer has a “100% Bavarian phenotype,” and a parody of Bryan Adam’s “Summer of ‘69” in which the chorus ends, “These are the first days of our Reich.”

“I found out about the Shoah when I stumbled across The Summer of ’88 parody,” OvenMan1488 wrote. From his discovery, he became a loyal TDS listener. “I think the creativness [sic] and humor is what brought a lotta people over. I have identified as alt-right since finding this content in June or July 2015.”

“You get them hooked in with Sven’s songs,” another poster wrote, “then when they’re all relaxed, Mike [Peinovich] comes in and cracks them over the head with some real shit.”

Nine users credit the animated YouTube series “Murdoch Murdoch” with helping them address the “JQ.” With a satirical and surrealist tone reminiscent of something that might be found on “Adult Swim,” the show focuses on three national socialists — all of whom represent slightly different variations of the ideology — attempting to navigate the alt-right and implement their utopian white ethnostate. “Murdoch Murdoch is fucking great. Something that doesn't take itself seriously and then you reflect on it all and you realize that funny show you watched is 100% right about everything,” one poster wrote. Another said they began watching it “ironically,” but “by the end I was full 1488.”

TRS users are somewhat torn about when people should be introduced to the neo-Nazi Daily Stormer, a site that consciously attempts to mimic the snarky writing style of mainstream sites like the now-defunct Gawker. Much like “Murdoch Murdoch” and TRS, it couches its hateful rhetoric in irony and humor. According to the Daily Stormer’s own style guide, “The unindoctrinated should not be able to tell if we are joking or not.” It also instructs writers to “Always Blame the Jews for Everything.”

“I respectfully disagree with everyone on this thread,” McBradley wrote, “The Daily Stormer should be introduced early, early on. Go the irony bro route, it’s all a big joke brah.”

I'm pretty useful at combatting bottom-tier mons (like obese rock-shaped ones owned by dark-skinned trainers) and can function at maximum power with a nice, diverse moveset (whittier uses hikkimori confusion) with almost no Chad levels (only 10 needed). However, I get outstripped really fast. also like Butterfree, I am of the bug-type.

Meanwhile, CharlesXII starts off relatively weak with a bald, virginal obese moveset. However, he ends up an unstoppable juggernaut on the battlefield because his buffness stat soars as he approaches Chad level 30.

This is highly debatable. The "optimal diet" for what exactly? One would assume the diet would have to meet all other nutritional needs and the negatives of a diet could outweigh or negate the longevity gains, if there would even be any, at such a low calorie intake. "Low calorie" in general is good, low/healthy BMI is a 'decent' general measure, there's no evidence being near starving is the optimal state for the human body.

Boomers Embrace Luxury Van Life
Empty nesters and retirees abandon RVs for the freedom and mobility of converted high-end vans
By Anne Marie Chaker

The latest luxury getaway: a van trip.

Attracted by Instagram images of a free-spirited, simpler way to travel, older consumers are turning to vans for their trips, while adding the high-end spin they can afford. Forget the beat-up Volkswagen bus: These travelers are shelling out for custom-fitted Mercedes-Benz or Ram ProMaster vans for their life on the road.

“The thing I like so much about van life is the simplicity,” says 55-year-old John Kennedy, now on his first big road trip, to California, in his $75,000 revamped Ram ProMaster. Mr. Kennedy, owner of a window-cleaning business in Aspen, Colo., bought the van last summer and two months ago picked it up from a conversion specialist, now outfitted with a double bed, stove and custom maple cabinets. The one thing his van doesn’t have: a bathroom, which means using public facilities.

That is a small price to pay for freedom, he says. “It’s being able to go down a road, stop and pull over to sleep, and start again when you’re ready.”

The van life—or #vanlife—phenomenon began on social media several years ago with photos of twentysomethings peering out at beach and mountain vistas from vans decorated with flowing drapes and colorful quilts. The images took off on the internet and caught the attention of older consumers who not only can afford luxury setups, but are also at a point in life when they can take extended, if not permanent, time off.

Owners of van conversion shops say business is booming, thanks in large part to empty nesters and semi-retirees who can afford a custom van that, all included, can cost $100,000 and up. Blue Ridge Adventure Vehicles in Asheville, N.C., says its business has increased each year in the last three years. More than half of the customers at Vanlife Customs in Denver, are retired or semi-retired, owner Dave Walsh says.

“They’re getting rid of their giant motorhomes and doing this,” says Erik Ekman, owner of Outside Van in Portland, Ore. His business has doubled from a year ago, he says, thanks largely to consumers in their 50s and 60s. “That’s when you have the freedom, the mobility and the money,” he says.

For that freedom, van travelers give up some amenities that other vacationers would see as a dealbreaker. The spaces are tiny, especially for two people, and life with a portable toilet isn’t for everyone. And while vanlifers bypass travel expenses including lodging and restaurants, gas prices this summer are expected to be the highest in years.

The #vanlife Instagram phenomenon that began a few years ago played up twentysomethings living a Bohemian life on the road.

Retirement experts say the van life reflects a new way that people want to retire. Rather than work straight through until a certain age, more people are spreading out their leisure time, whether it’s between jobs or working a few hours a week as they travel. “Boomers are reinventing retirement and saying ‘I get to live my life the way I want,’” says Jaye Smith, the 63-year-old co-founder of Reboot Partners, a consulting firm that specializes in retirement and career breaks.

For some people, sleeping in the van at night can take some getting used to. “As soon as the sun sets, I get petrified,” says Lauren Costantini, a 48-year-old former chief executive of a medical-device company who is semi-retired. “I put the window coverings up and I feel better.” She recently returned home to Boulder, Colo., after a successful four-month trip across the country on her own.

Edward Lawlor two years ago bought a custom remodeled Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van from Outside Van for $130,000, which he takes out on the road with his wife Betsy for three to five weeks every few months. The former dean at Washington University in St. Louis is semi-retired and teaches on a flexible schedule. The couple has traveled in the van through New England and Nova Scotia in the summer and to New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast in the winter.

The idea for the van came in the summer of 2012, when the couple rented an RV. The vehicle’s size and battery-power limitations meant the Lawlors would take it to campgrounds at night to plug into electricity for air conditioning and the microwave. “We hated it,” says Mr. Lawlor, 63. The campsites were typically crowded and noisy. On the road, they had met couples who converted cargo vans into smaller, more nimble setups. “I decided this would be our ticket,” he says.

The Lawlors’ van conversion includes three 12-volt batteries that power the living amenities when the van is parked and turned off. (The batteries recharge by way of an auxiliary power system while the van is running and can last for four days without another charge). The van has a separate heating system, a roof vent with rain sensor that can shut automatically, an induction cook top, refrigerator and microwave oven. A 20-gallon tank supplies water to the kitchen and the shower. Thetford Corp.’s Curve Porta Potti serves in lieu of a built-in bathroom. An aluminum-framed bed sits three feet over the floor, allowing for storage beneath.

“It’s close quarters,” Mr. Lawlor says. “But you learn little tricks to stay out of each other’s way.” One tip: Don’t try to pass by when someone is cooking.

Like many Vanlifers, the Lawlors like that they can park most anywhere overnight with their van, which is about 19 feet long and 8 feet wide and fits snugly into most parking spaces and roadside nooks. He uses a cellphone app called Allstays that provides information on camping and parking restrictions, and hasn’t yet had a problem with overnight stays.

“We aim to do all the active things that Vanlifers do,” Mr. Lawlor says. “It’s not for young people alone.”

Melody Shapiro, a 74-year-old retired psychotherapist in Hood River, Ore., says her Sprinter van, purchased six years ago, offers a private retreat wherever she needs it, whether it’s a mile away by the river or at her son’s house in Monterey, Calif. “I just park it at the house. I can sleep in it, have my coffee in the morning and I don’t wake everybody up.”

Still, things can go wrong. In the first two weeks of Ms. Costantini’s cross-country trip, a leak developed in the ceiling while it was raining in California. “That was the most stressful time. I pulled out my pots and pans and was filling them,” she recalls. At a service station in Las Vegas, a $140 repair involving silicone caulking did the job.

Things can also happen back at home. During the Lawlors’s five-week trip last year, there was a power outage at the apartment in St. Louis. “Our freezer leaked and damaged the floor,” Mr. Lawlor says. Fortunately, the landlord was forgiving.

Amazon’s Typical Worker Is in a Warehouse Making $28,446 a Year
Most workers at regional fulfillment centers earn paychecks nowhere near those of workforce on Seattle campus
The median worker at Amazon.com makes $28,446 a year—much less than the $240,430 median at Facebook Inc.

When Amazon.com Inc. AMZN -1.89% disclosed its workers’ median annual salary of $28,446 last week, the predominantly blue-collar nature of its workforce became clear.

The figure puts Amazon on par with chocolate manufacturer Hershey Co. , slightly above retailer Home Depot Inc. —and miles below the $240,430 median annual compensation at Facebook, according to the companies’ latest proxy statements.

Amazon is often compared to Silicon Valley tech giants like Facebook Inc., Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google, but a vast logistical apparatus separates it from its tech peers.

Most of the roughly half-million employees at Amazon don’t make six figures while spending their workdays writing code. They unload trucks, drive forklifts and walk miles collecting products to fill orders—all for around the same pay as workers in other companies’ warehouses.

One researcher likened Amazon to the child produced by a three-way merger between Google, United Parcel Service Inc. and Walmart Inc.

“At Amazon, you’ve got this whole group of foot soldiers out there that are working on fulfillment centers that aren’t part of the picture for the other names in internet land,” said Michael Olson, senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray. “It shows how Amazon is different from the other tech stocks.”

More than 330 large public companies have disclosed median annual pay figures for the first time this year, a requirement of the post-financial crisis Dodd-Frank law. Median salaries reported so far range from $253,015 at biotech firm Incyte Corp. to less than $10,000 at retailers with big part-time workforces and some manufacturers with high numbers of employees in low-wage countries.

In the S&P 500, Amazon isn’t classified as a tech stock, but rather as a part of the retail industry. At the same time, Amazon is valued at 184 times its estimated earnings for this year, according to analysts surveyed by FactSet—a far higher valuation than even Facebook and Alphabet.

Amazon started as a retailer, but it always had technology at its core. When Chief Executive Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994, it was a bookseller, but it took advantage of the nascent internet to connect faraway customers.

Today, Amazon uses software to run everything it does, whether that is shuttling packages around the world, streaming movies on the web, storing companies’ digital files on its servers or recommending products to customers. It has spent years honing its machine-learning and artificial-intelligence technology to the point where it can forecast demand, identify fraud and recommend products to customers.

But with more than 175 operating and fulfillment centers, where workers pick, pack and ship orders, and more than 35 sorting centers globally, most members of Amazon’s workforce are a contrast to the 45,000-plus largely white-collar workers at its Seattle campus offices and elsewhere.

The median salary data was disclosed under new rules mandating the information for public companies. Companies have some leeway in how they report the figure, which is intended to identify the worker who is paid at the midpoint for all employees.

Median pay of $28,446 works out to about $13.68 an hour—around what the typical U.S. front-line warehouse worker makes, experts say. The median pay includes Amazon’s workers from more than 50 countries and spans the entire Amazon workforce, including full- and part-time workers in every area of the company.

“These roles range from associates working in our fulfillment centers to customer-service representatives to software engineers and product managers,” an Amazon spokeswoman said. Amazon pays its full-time fulfillment-center workers in the U.S. an average hourly wage of more than $15, including cash, stock and incentive bonuses, the spokeswoman said.

In some ways, Amazon’s workforce resembles that of major retailers. Amazon has the fifth-highest median pay of retailers ranked by S&P Global, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of corporate proxy data provided by MyLogIQ LLC, exceeding the median pay figures from Home Depot, Macy’s Inc., Gap Inc. and Walmart Inc. In a securities filing Friday evening, Walmart reported that it paid its median worker $19,177 last year, ranking it near the middle of the 18 retailers that have reported data so far.

Amazon’s median pay trails all 10 companies in S&P Global rankings in the transportation industry, including several railroad and airline companies.

The company’s “enormous market advantage” doesn’t appear to be translating into more pay for the median warehouse worker, said Ben Zipperer, an economist at the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank in Washington, D.C.

Brian Devine, senior vice president at logistics staffing firm ProLogistix, estimates that Amazon pays in the upper half of employers in logistics, but not in the top 10%.

U.S. cities have been vying for the chance to host Amazon’s next batch of white-collar jobs, which could number as many as 50,000, at a proposed second headquarters.

The average pay for software-development engineers who work for Amazon in the U.S. is about $107,000, according to worker salaries shared on website Glassdoor, an online marketplace where employees can anonymously report their pay. The average pay for Amazon’s logistics specialists in the U.S. is about $45,000, according to Glassdoor data.

Amazon has said that, depending on location, the average compensation for roles at its second headquarters could top $100,000

U.S. Hints at China Truce as World Warns of Trade-War Threat

Treasury’s Mnuchin considers China trip amid trade dispute
China’s Commerce Ministry confirms U.S. has requested visit

Mnuchin said he’s considering a trip to China amid a trade dispute with Beijing. Bloomberg’s Ros Krasny reports.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he’s considering a trip to China amid a trade dispute with Beijing that finance chiefs warn could derail the global economic upswing.

Mnuchin said he’s “cautiously optimistic” of reaching an agreement with China that bridges their differences over trade.

“A trip is under consideration,” Mnuchin told reporters on Saturday in Washington at the IMF’s spring meetings. “I’m not going to make a comment on timing, nor do I have anything confirmed.”

China’s Ministry of Commerce said Sunday it is aware that the U.S. is considering a visit to Beijing to negotiate economic and trade issues and welcomes such a move.

A visit by the U.S. Treasury secretary to China could signal a breakthrough in the spat between the world’s two-biggest economies, whose threats to slap tariffs on each other have rattled markets and raised fears of a trade war. It would come at a sensitive time for the region’s geopolitics, with negotiations under way on a planned meeting between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

Mnuchin’s remarks came as finance ministers and central bankers at the IMF meetings gave their latest economic assessments, often citing trade as a threat looming over the strongest upswing in seven years.

Global growth has strengthened and is increasingly broad based, the IMF’s main advisory committee said Saturday. However, it noted that “rising financial vulnerabilities, increasing trade and geopolitical tensions, and historically high global debt threaten global growth prospects.”

China Meeting
IMF First Deputy Managing Director David Lipton summed up the main takeaway he heard from officials at the meetings this week as “time’s are good but it’s getting risky.”

Mnuchin said he met with Yi Gang, governor of the People’s Bank of China, at the IMF gathering this week. The discussions focused on issues related to the Chinese central bank, not trade, said the secretary. Mnuchin said they also discussed China’s planned further opening of some markets, a move that U.S. has encouraged and “appreciated.”

“China will vigorously push forward the reform and opening-up of the financial sector, significantly relax market access restrictions, create a more attractive investment environment, strengthen the protection of intellectual properties and actively expand imports,” Yi said in a statement on Saturday. China has announced plans to gradually remove foreign ownership caps for limits for car-, ship- and aircraft-makers.

Sanctions Help
Mnuchin said China has been “very helpful” in supporting U.S. sanctions against North Korea, and he welcomed Kim’s suspension of nuclear weapons testing that was announced the day earlier.

“We are going to continue the sanctions” and a “maximum pressure” campaign until North Korea abandons its nuclear-weapons program in a verifiable way, he said.

Mnuchin indicated he’s involved in a “dialogue” with the Chinese government to resolve the trade dispute. “We’re cautiously optimistic to see if we can try to reach an agreement,” he said.

Tensions have been escalating as Trump accuses China of unfair trade and presses for a reduction in the the U.S.’s $375 billion trade deficit with the Asian nation. The president is threatening to impose tariffs on as much as $150 billion on Chinese imports to punish the nation for alleged intellectual property theft. If the U.S. follows through, China has vowed to impose retaliatory tariffs on everything from American airplanes to soybeans.

Russia, Japan
Mnuchin also said he met with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov during the IMF meeting, at Russia’s request. Moscow sought “clarification” on U.S. sanctions, Mnuchin said, without elaborating. “These are very important tools. We will continue to look at the use of sanctions in all different areas,” he said.

Siluanov on Friday said he views sanctions as “an instrument of protectionism” and condemned any measures taken against his country.

The U.S. has had discussions with Japan on a possible bilateral trade agreement, the secretary said. Trump had a “very successful” meeting this week in Florida with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Mnuchin said.

Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso said he told Mnuchin that protectionism isn’t good. The U.S. and Japan clearly differ on their trade policies, Aso told reporters on Friday after meetings between the Group of 20 on the sidelines of the IMF summit.

France’s Emmanuel Macron lands in Washington Monday with a mission to take the edge off Trump’s “America First” foreign policy, for Europe at least.

The French president has had more success in striking up a rapport with Trump than most global leaders but his record of securing policy concessions is patchy all the same. While Macron pointed to this month’s missile strikes against Syria as a victory for French diplomacy, he failed to keep the U.S. in the Paris climate accord and his aides last week played down expectations that he might persuade Trump to change course on other issues.

Retirement Shock: Need to Find a Job After 40 Years at General Electric
Roughly $140 billion in GE stock-market wealth was lost in the past year, not just at Wall Street firms but among former employees who, like many small investors, long believed the company invincible
Former General Electric Co. employee Gary Zabroski, of Lynn, Mass., worked at the company 40 years, starting just a couple of years out of high school. He kept much of his savings in GE shares. KAYANA SZYMCZAK FOR THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Gary Zabroski started working for General Electric Co. GE 3.93% in 1976, at an aviation factory in his hometown of Lynn, Mass. The job paid well, came with benefits and, for Mr. Zabroski, provided a career ladder for a man with a high- school education who started out cleaning toilets.

“You had a job for life if you had gotten in there,” said Mr. Zabroski, 61 years old. He rose to punch-press operator and retired in 2016, after working 40 years at the century-old plant, which roared to life during World War II and still churns out engines for jets and helicopters. He left GE with an annual pension of $85,000 and company stock valued at more than $280,000.

Retirement looked pretty good until GE shares collapsed. His shares are now worth about $110,000, prompting a late-life job hunt. “I never planned on retiring and having to go back to work,” said Mr. Zabroski, who has monthly mortgage payments and supports a partially disabled wife. “It’s kind of scary.”

The rapid unraveling of GE has wiped out roughly $140 billion in stock-market wealth in the past year, not just at big Wall Street firms but among small investors. The industrial giant is one of the most widely held U.S. stocks.

By comparison, the stock value lost by GE in the past 12 months is twice the amount that vanished when Enron Corp. collapsed in 2001—and more than the combined market capitalization erased by the bankruptcies of Lehman Brothers and General Motors during the financial crisis. Longer term, GE’s market capitalization has fallen more than $460 billion since its 2000 peak.

GE’s recent losses haven’t been caused by scandal, catastrophic economic conditions or a market meltdown. They have arisen from badly timed investments, troubles in key markets and overly rosy financial projections that together have triggered a restructuring that could break apart the company.

GE executives have said that most of the company’s businesses were doing well, despite problems of the past year, and that the company has enough cash to fund operations and the dividend. “I am keenly aware of the pain our stock performance and dividend cut have caused with investors, retirees and their families,” said John Flannery, GE’s chief executive. The company is focused on improving its performance and earning back trust, he said.

“This is a show-me moment,” Mr. Flannery said, “and the most impactful thing we can do is continue to make GE simpler and stronger. We will not let up until the job is done.”

On Friday, GE reported its latest quarterly results, which included rising profits in its aviation and health-care units and continued woes in its power unit. Mr. Flannery backed his 2018 profit targets and said the company was making progress on its turnaround efforts.

About 43% of GE shareholders are retail investors, people who own stock in their personal accounts, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. That compares with 32% at Johnson & Johnson and 21% at Boeing Co.

Among those hard hit by GE stock losses have been company retirees, including former factory workers who took advantage of a stock-ownership plan to build their savings. For decades, the company has had a program that encourages employees to buy GE shares by offering to match 50% of worker contributions, which were taken directly from paychecks.

The fall in GE stock prices has put more of the financial burden of retirement on pensions. More than 600,000 people have pensions from GE, which is one of many employers struggling with those obligations. Pension plans sponsored by S&P Composite 1500 companies have an average funding level of 87% and a combined unfunded liability of $286 billion, according to Mercer. In the public sector, state and local governments have an aggregate unfunded liability of $1.4 trillion, according to the Pew Charitable Trusts.

With 71.4% of assets needed to cover its pension liabilities, GE is one of the worst funded large corporate pension plans in the U.S., according to an April report by consulting firm Milliman Inc. GE’s pension obligations, nearly $100 billion at the end of 2017, are underfunded by almost $30 billion.

“Their pension funded ratio is among the 10 lowest in our study, and that’s pretty significant given that they’re the fourth-largest company by asset size,” said Zorast Wadia, a consulting actuary at Milliman. The firm’s study included the 100 largest pension plans managed by publicly traded companies.

GE expects to borrow $6 billion this year to contribute to the plan. Rising interest rates, which increase the expected returns on plan assets, also will reduce the shortfall. In 2015, GE stopped supplemental health-care plans for many retirees and substituted a subsidy for private coverage. That change, plus a reduction in retiree life insurance, cut obligations by $3.3 billion.

Investors, many of them GE retirees, will gather Wednesday for the annual shareholder meeting. It will be held inside one of GE’s newest facilities, a design center near Pittsburgh that uses a form of 3-D printing to make metal parts, including ones for GE jet engines.

The annual gatherings give investors a chance to air complaints, from CEO pay to environmental pollution. This year, retirees are expected to ask whether the company can make good on its promises.

“We never thought GE would do this to us,” said John Phelps, who worked more than 40 years at GE’s silicone plant in Waterford, N.Y., which was sold in 2006. “We believed they would do their best to take care of us.”

Mr. Phelps, a former union man who runs an advocacy group for GE retirees, said many fear for their pensions and other benefits.

The ability of the company to meet all of its financial obligations has been strained in recent years; its annual dividend payment of more than $8 billion was unsustainable because the industrial divisions didn’t grow enough to offset the loss of the financial-services business that for years helped earnings.

Companies from all kinds of industries have long tapped GE for executives because of its reputation for excellence.

For workers, a job at GE was a job for life. That changed in the 1980s when the company cut layers of its workforce during a period of austerity that earned former chief executive Jack Welch the nickname “Neutron Jack.”

With the rise of the global economy at the turn of the century, the company began shifting operations and jobs overseas. By the end of 2017, about a third of GE’s 313,000 employees were based in the U.S., compared with 60% two decades ago.

Ben Marruffo worked at GE’s Morrison, Ill., appliance controls plant for 42 years until his 2008 retirement. The facility, about 130 miles west of Chicago, opened in the late 1940s and closed in 2010. GE sold its home-appliance business to Chinese company Haier Group in 2016 for $5.6 billion.

Mr. Marruffo grew up a few miles from the plant and never moved far. He was one of eight children, and five of his brothers also worked at the GE plant. His father worked at a steel mill for 40 years, and Mr. Marruffo said he remembered his father coming home with holes burned in his clothes from the molten metal. His father had a pension but didn’t get to collect for long before he died.

Mr. Marruffo, 71, started with GE as an apprentice, working in different engineering and manufacturing areas. Just like many business experts, he respected GE’s management. Mr. Marruffo accumulated GE stock through the company’s Savings and Security Plan. He figured the company was just about invincible, which made the fall in its stock price devastating. He sold some last year but still owns about 6,000 shares. He now regrets he didn’t sell more.

For years Mr. Marruffo didn’t pay much attention to the stock price, he said, but after watching half of his money evaporate, he checks every day. “I look at the stock market at the end of the day and wonder if it is has hit its bottom,” he said, “and how long it will take to recover what it has lost.”

He remains optimistic that Mr. Flannery can turn around GE’s fortunes. “You kind of hold your breath and hope there isn’t another shoe to drop,” he said.

GE stock has long been seen as a safe investment, with the good fortune of the 125-year-old company a reflection of the strength of the U.S. economy. Many people unconnected to GE kept the stock in their investment portfolios.

Jack Ennis, a retired New Jersey schoolteacher who is 63, began buying GE stock in 1980 when he started investing for his mother after his father died. He compared GE’s decline with such long-gone companies as RCA, Union Carbide and Allied Signal .

Mr. Ennis said he has seen GE go from “America’s trusted consumer lightbulb and appliance provider” to a “convoluted conglomerate heavily focused on finance and communications.” He blamed former chief executive Jeff Immelt, who retired last summer after 16 years at the helm, and the GE board. Including dividends, GE stock gained 8% over the Immelt years, while the S&P 500 rose 214%.

“Sadly, investor confidence is a difficult thing to win back once it’s lost,” Mr. Ennis said.

Jack Feigh, 69, traveled for different jobs at the company—California, Kansas City, Louisville—before retiring in 2007 from the appliance division in Salt Lake City.

His parents were bakers who owned a cake shop, and Mr. Feigh recalled how self-employment left them with little more than Social Security after they retired. He was determined to do better for his wife and three children, contributing the maximum amount from his weekly paycheck to buy GE stock. He was encouraged by co-workers doing the same. Older workers he knew retired with plenty of savings.

While he was working, Mr. Feigh would use his dividends to buy more GE shares. “At the time, I didn’t think you could beat that,” he said. “The opportunity to buy more and more stock.”

Mr. Feigh retired after more than 30 years at GE. When the company’s share price tumbled in the financial crisis, he lost almost $300,000 in value.

“Employees need to think very carefully about investing their own money beyond 10% in company stock,” said Corey Rosen, founder of the National Center for Employee Ownership, a nonprofit that works with companies. “If you are looking at retirement, then diversification is a good thing.”

In hindsight, Mr. Feigh agrees. But at the time of the financial crisis, he thought most stocks were getting battered so he might as well stick with GE. At the start of 2017, he had about $190,000 in GE stock, which is now worth about $70,000.

He consulted with a financial planner about selling what was left, but was advised to hold the stock. It was bound to go up, he said the planner told him. Mr. Feigh now doubts that it will, at least in his lifetime.

“I thought I was doing it right, but apparently I wasn’t,” he said. He hasn’t talked to his family much about the losses, he said, other than to vent that his “once-proud retirement was going up in smoke.”

Mr. Feigh depends on his pension and Social Security checks. He uses the GE dividend to pay his car insurance. He and his wife have put planned vacations on hold, including dreams of a cruise in Europe and a trip to Australia.

“The way GE’s stock is going,” he said, “we might lose it all.”

There is an epigenetic component of aging, there's no question some genes are linked to longer lifespans and others to shorter ones for a plethora of reasons based on what they do or do not do when expressed. Our genetic make up is a stochastic component as much as damage is, but regardless of certain genes, aging is defined primarily as the accumulation of damage in the body to the point where disease states emerge. How do you address that problem? SENS for example offers 7 problems to address appropriately to bring about "negligible senescence'

1)cell loss or atrophy (without replacement)
2)oncogenic nuclear mutations and epimutations
3)cell senescence (Death-resistant cells)
4)mitochondrial mutations
5)Intracellular junk or junk inside cells (lysosomal aggregates)
6)extracellular junk or junk outside cells (extracellular aggregates)
7)random extracellular cross-linking

DNA methylation can certainly be used to determine or estimate the biological age of a tissue but the global loss of methylation via aging is something that can be reduced or prevented under the umbrella of the problems identified above. It's more of a measure than something that is a primary means or cause of aging.

Edit: Another example is telomere length. Say we find a way to re-lengthen as they become shorter with age and shorter telomeres are a sign of aging. If we lengthen to a more "youthful" state you'd measure a younger biological age. It's both an indicator and effect of aging that can be reversed, but also useful as a measure.

His "job" is to be a caretaker for a rich dude's lake cabin and hunting property up in northern MN. He is granted a corner of the property to have a trailer and lives rent free. When the family dies or they sell he gets deeded his trailer and 10 acres so long as he stays in their employ. Realistically the owners rarely come and use the property so he mostly just hangs out and chills. Drinks and smokes. Rides the owner's four-wheeler around the country roads or up to a nearby lake resort to drink beers sometimes. Can go boating on the lake whenever he wants. Even has a woman who loves him for his trailer and shares his love of beer and cigarettes. His only job duties are to make sure the place is looked after, ward off trespassers and poachers, and keep the driveway plowed in winter.

Dude has done this for the last 40+ years. Recently the owner sold the place and he came into the 10 acres free and clear and fulfilled his destiny.

Agree with all of this. There's also no disc drive, which I find obnoxious. The USB-C ports are by far the worst part though. So many times I go to plug in a printer or something and then I have to find the damn connector.

Also do NOT pop the keys off to clean them. You have to have the whole top case replaced. The keys are not removable anymore.

I have not told my wife this other than alluded to it as a fantasy life plan. She does not think I am serious or else thinks she "wins" whenever we argue about it.

I am going to quit job and move back. Buy cheap house and get best job I can but ultimately whatever bullshit gig I can to stay afloat. We will be fine but in worst case scenario not a lot of extra cash. I could buy a house in a small town or the country for cash right now and live the good life, chilling and working for the county or like being a rural county judge's permaclerk or a partially employed small town solo. This was my ideal law outcome when I graduated but now LJL at your wife signing onto this. Little does she know I am going to drop DAT SURPRISE on her in 18-24 months and it will be 180. Wish me luck bros.

This seems obvious to me based on Hovarth's clock and the induced pluripotent stem cell research that shows restoration of the young phenotype in old cells. There is undoubtedly a stochastic damage component, but it is probably not important - people could conceivably live for hundreds of years without addressing it.

once a lib has declared that you are on the wrong side of history, it's pretty much game over.
