An earlier version of this review misstated the title of one of Beyoncé’s songs. It is “Daddy Lessons,” not “Daddy Issues.”

Im quite old, but cannot name or hum a Beyonce song that came out within the last ten years. Can you? I know, though internet exposure that she had an album called "Lemonade" and a song with the lyric "Boy bye", but does she have any hits?
I certainly remember "Bootylicious", "Say My Name", "Crazy in Love".... Do pop stars these days even have hits? I was never a fan of R&B, but I knew those songs just from day to day life.

JFC at this:
"That may be one reason that last year, Beyoncé lost the Grammy for album of the year to Adele, the sort of upset that triggered a storm of criticism about the Grammys’ relevance, and, effectively, an almost-apology from Adele. "
the phrasing of this is ludicrious-- as if Beyonce starts with a presumptive grammy and if someone else gets it Beyonce "lost" it. Meanwhile, white celebrities are just ONE. WRONG. MOVE. away from the SJW rage machine so of course Adele "apologized." The article they link to is even more unhinged and essentially argues that any award won by a white is inherently illegitimate:

That may be one reason that last year, Beyoncé lost the Grammy for album of the year to Adele, the sort of upset that triggered a storm of criticism about the Grammys’ relevance, and, effectively, an almost-apology from Adele. In time, though, that moment will feel like a glitch. That space on the mantel will be filled by a National Medal of the Arts, or a Presidential Medal of Freedom. A Nobel Prize in Literature should also be considered in reach, despite that organization's historical suppression of brilliant women of color in the arts and sciences. Like no other musician of her generation apart from Kanye West, Beyoncé is performing musicology in real time. It is bigger than any tribute she might receive. History is her stage.

If you don’t like her music fine but watch the performance and evaluate it on a technical basis.

Again, you missed the point. The point is the article, not Beyonce or your poor taste in music.

I agree that paragraph is unhinged, but it’s also unhinged to say she has no talent or she’s being forcememed. Watch the performance yourself and see if it’s not the best pop performance in the modern era.

how can you evaluate Beyonce's performance on a technical basis?
i'm not being snarky, just not sure what you mean.
for example, if you evaluate Beyonce's Coachella performance vs a performance by the NY Ballet on a technical basis, what does that comparison look like? or vs the Vienna Philharmonic?

The NYT article is over the top but Beyonce does do an incredible job at live shows. I highly recommend you all watch the Coachella show. In terms of pop music performances, she's up there with Michael Jackson and James Brown actually. I'll wait for a link to an active pop star who puts on a better stage and sound show than she does.
